Baby Boomer Confluence
The race is on to keep baby boomers, especially those who have crossed over into their 60s (the first ones are doing so this year) "engaged."
"Civic engagement" is the term of the year with all sorts of organizations running programs and providing education about boomers and how to get them to volunteer or even keep working.
In this discussion, "work" means both paid and nonpaid. Boomers are turning out to be terrific volunteers for nonprofits, and many of them are even interested in capstone careers with nonprofits.
A good example of organizations coming together on the boomer issue is what is happening in Scottsdale, Az. Already a great retirement spot for boomers, the City of Scottsdale has teamed up with Civic Ventures, Scottsdale Community College, the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, and a new nonprofit called Boomerz to provide a range of programs.
There have already been a workshop for volunteer managers and executive directors; a job fair; a "Get Involved Expo," and more.
Is this a model for other cities? Looks like it to us.

I would love for my veterans organization to be able to co-sponsor a program like the ‘get involved expo’.Would someone be kind enough to share the details with me? There are so many veterans out here that could use this information.
I’d love to hear from boomers with time on their hands who like to reminisce. I’m collecting stories and anecdotes about growing up as a baby boomer. It’s most important that boomer memories are collated and made available for sharing with others from all generations and cultures. Boomers have experienced such massive change and witnessed some stunning historical events, but we want the day-to-day stories, too.
