Nonprofit Myths Shattered, Controversy, and Resources

Thursday April 3, 2008

Our web surfing this week has turned up some links you definitely do not want to miss.

  • Guidestar's recent newsletter provided four of the myths surrounding board members and the realities. The ideas are from Gail Perry's book, Fired Up Fundraising: Turn Board Passion into Action. The upshot of the list is that we all need to do a better job of training and motivating our board members.

  • Two nonprofit bloggers squared off about whether something should be done about the numbers of nonprofits. Jack Siegal of Charity Governance blog wants something done to stop the proliferation. Jeff Brooks at Donor Power blog says that despite some inefficiency and duplication, new nonprofit deserve a chance.

  • On her blog, Getting Attention, nonprofit marketing expert, Nancy E. Schwartz, does a critique of Oprah's show, The Big Give. Schwartz is not impressed and lists the ways the show is missing the big boat.

  • If you need information, studies, statistics or whatever about volunteerism, here is a great source. IssueLab, this month, focuses on volunteerism under the expert guidance of Nancy Macduff. Nancy provides an introduction to the topic, which leads to an online bibliography of research on volunteerism.
