What, Me Worry?
Monday November 17, 2008
According to the Gallup Poll, there are several indicators that the economy is getting worse in ways that will likely affect nonprofits:
- 55% of Americans report that they are cutting back on household spending as a result of the problems in the economy. The consumers feeling the pinch most are people 30-49 and families with children.
- Four out of 10 Americans in recent weeks report that they worried about money "yesterday." This number increased acutely in mid-September, when the Wall Street crisis became all-consuming news, and remains high.
- Since the election of Barack Obama, the overall percentage of Americans saying that the economic outlook is getting worse fell significantly. But the number of high-income Americans who said that the economic outlook is getting worse surged. As Dennis Jacobe, Chief Economist at Gallup said, "...less optimism among upper-income households is a much more significant problem for the economy."
