Philanthropists Encouraged to Look for Biggest Impact

Sunday November 30, 2008

In this economy, donors have to focus on those causes where they can have the most impact.

Arabella Philanthropic Investment Advisors, a group of advisors that helps wealthy people with their giving, has released a report that lists seven issues where one's donor dollars can make the most difference. The advisory group notes that these areas are pressing in their needs, but don't get much attention and support. The issues are in the report, High-Impact Giving Opportunities: Philanthropy that Makes a Difference, and include:

  • Encouraging youth participation in politics.
  • Addressing the global food crisis by supporting small-scale farming in Africa.
  • Preventing climate change by building a green-collar workforce.
  • Developing conflict resolution through youth athletics.
  • Creating better disaster response by investing in recovery after initial relief.
  • Promoting equal opportunity and economic development by supporting community colleges.
  • Addressing global health through spotlighting neglected tropical diseases.

Reading the Arabella report started me thinking about how and why we give to certain organizations and causes. It has helped me begin a dialogue with my family about issues we should financially support and be more involved with on a personal level. I think this is great for small and large donors alike! Fabulous!
