Bill Gates: An Example of 'Inspired Philanthropy'

Follow me on:

Yesterday, Bill Gates released his first annual letter about his philanthropic efforts through his foundation.

Nicholas D. Kristof, of the NY Times, interviewed Mr. Gates and got an early view of the letter. Kristof is not without criticism of the Gates philanthropy juggernaut, but he says the man's work has had staggering effect. For instance, just Gates' investment in the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations has saved more than three million lives since 2000. In fact, in 1960 nearly 20 million children died annually before the age of 5. That death rate has been halved, and now Mr. Gates plans to halve it again. That is progress.

Kristof asked Gates for his advice to someone who wants to engage in "micro-philanthropy." Gates answer was: “The key thing is to pick a cause, whether it's crops or diseases or great high schools....Pick one and get some more in-depth knowledge. If possible, travel to see the problems firsthand, then pick an organization to support with donations or volunteer time."

That advice is similar to that given in a wonderful book titled Inspired Philanthropy. It is full of specific ways we can all go from just concerned donors to inspired philanthropists. Read about author Tracey Gary's quickstart program, and how you can advance through the stages of becoming a more focused and effective donor.

Thank you SO much Joanne.
Please let us know how to serve you and your readership to create their inspired giving and legacy plans. We are a nonprofit so LOVE serving! Gates is a breakthrough role model for our time.

We don’t have to have his money…think about all the millions being spent, hundreds of millions on SuperBowl ads…
What would you do for the public good?

What will you do for those you care about to see them through these times. Together YES WE CAN.
