Celebrity, Death and Charity: Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson Die

Thursday June 25, 2009

The nonprofit world suffers losses when celebrities that have been spokespeople and supporters die.

This week is shaping up to be devastating. We lost Farrah Fawcett, who was active with the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the American Cancer Society, among other activities. Her final gift was a moving documentary, "Farrahs's Story," that followed her courageous battle with cancer.

Fawcett's death had been expected for some time, but the world was shocked by the sudden death of Michael Jackson.

Whatever the problems of this iconic star in recent years, he will be remembered for his deeply moving and vastly influential song, "We Are The World," written with Lionel Richie to raise funds for Africa during the mid-1980s.

Over the years, Jackson supported a multitude of causes ranging from AIDS to Juvenile Diabetes to Sickle Cell Research.

We welcome your comments about celebrity and causes, and how those causes are affected by celebrity deaths.

(3) Michael says:

A dancer and celebrity black drag queen who was obsessive about his looks and compulsive about getting a large number of plastic surgeries. His improper relationships with children, with his family and his abusive dad are well known. A confused, misguided, uneducated dancer of cult like status who was a big mess. Was it drugs that led to his death? Yes, we can speculate! Normal people don’t die of cardiac arrest at the young age of 50!

May Michael Jackson and Farreh Fawcett R.I.P. I am uterly shocked by both these deaths. It is a truly sad and tragic time. I pray for both their families and friends in this time of sadness. They can get through this remembering the times of glory, happiness and power from two great icons. Their prescence will live on in the hearts of the devoted fans and people who loved them. They may be gone but they will never be forgotten. Let us pray for everyone who has ever lost anyone.

I feel so sad for this great woman, but now she at peace and in a better place. I think its a disgrace that all the media has turned Michael Jacksons death into a media circus and not much said about Farrahs death, typical media crap, give this woman a send off she deserves. Ryan,Redmond,Alana, and friends and family, my thoughts are with you, my own mother died of cancer the same as Farrah, when i was seventeen, god bless Farrah and Micheal.

Hi Joanne. While other people are using this sad time as a fresh opportunity to attack MJ’s character, thank you for this worthwhile and inspirational post. I’ve linked to it on our latest blog entry on the same topic. Towards the end I’ve listed 2 sites where MJ fans can raise donations for causes that were important to him.
