We don't yet know the full picture about charitable giving in 2009, but Steve MacLaughlin, of Blackbaud, has some stats about online giving for the year. Blackbaud closely tracks nonprofits that use its online fundraising and CRM tools, enabling an early peek at online trends throughout the year.

Here are some online giving stats and trends that Steve revealed today:

  • Giving online is still growing despite the economic climate. Revenue from online giving grew 46% in 2009 when compared with 2008.
  • The final three months of 2009 saw the most online revenue, accounting for 46% of the total. December, alone, accounted for 30% of revenue and 18% of the volume in number of transactions.
  • The average gift online in December was $244.17, a decrease of 2% from December 2008. However, online giving in December 2009 grew 32% when compared to December 2008.
  • The average online donation for all of 2009 was $144.72, a 5% decline from 2008. However, the online channel is higher than other methods of fundraising in terms of average gift.
  • Online giving continues to be best at motivating many small donations. However, Blackbaud found that nearly 1798 nonprofits in its analysis did receive at least one online gift of $1000 or more in 2009. Larger gifts fall in the range of $1000 to $5000, with the median at $3500. The median was up significantly from $2500 in 2008.

Take aways: Online giving is still coming on strong, with a strong growth rate despite the weak economy. Online giving is particularly strong at the end of the year. More information along with charts can be found at Steve's blog.
