The BP oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico is a disaster of a different kind. Unlike the sudden and overwhelming earthquake in Haiti earlier this year, this crisis is slow and oozing like the oil seeping into the marshlands of the coast. It is a spectacle of dying wildlife, a hurting economy, and a terrible dance of hope and despair.
It is hard to know what to do, frankly, on an individual basis. Volunteer? Donate? Write letters?
