I just saw a friend head off to her yearly bucket list trip...this year, it's a month in Africa, last year was China, and the year before South America.
My friend served in the PeaceCorps in her youth and is a savvy world traveler. She is prepared for what she will see and knows how to act. But many people are not prepared and, when confronted with poverty, think that they should help. Unfortunately that help may actually bring harm.
Don't be an ugly American, philanthropist or volunteer. It's so easy to fall into the whites in shining armor syndrome when visiting foreign shores.
