Leave it to College Humor to bring some fun to a cause.
Rather than standing celebrities up to deliver sobering news, the website recruited their celebrity friends to make silly videos --24 of them--and is then selling the whole collection for a donation (minimum $1) to those of us who want a good laugh and to support a good cause. They've called the campaign Malarious, a great tongue-in-cheek play on the words "hilarious" and "malaria."
The cause, of course is anything but hilarious. It is MalariaNoMore, which fights malaria through a host of activities.
College Humor's Malarious website explains their unorthodox approach like this:
"We here at CollegeHumor hate malaria. We wanted to do something about it. So we got our celebrity friends to make some ridiculous videos. You can watch them by making a small contribution to Malaria No More. Every contribution treats a child for Malaria. Come on. You can do this. Last month, you bought an automatic toothbrush for $50 that you still haven't bothered to set up. Buy Malarious, and you'll get to see Elizabeth Banks get pied in the face. Is that a good deal or what?"
I love this light-hearted approach to a serious business. Sometimes we can laugh our way to generosity at least as easily, if not more so, than with other approaches.
So go ahead, enjoy a few of these videos and support a good cause while you're chuckling.
Hat tip to Oscio for letting me know about this campaign.
