I think that the holidays bring some of the best direct mail fundraising packages of the year to my front door.
An example is the one from Save the Children. The envelope itself is joyful, with multi-colored stars and a drawing of children dressed in a variety of styles showing they are from all around the world.
What really caught my eye though was the teaser on the large envelope. It read "Your FREE 2012 Wrapping Paper & Gift Tags are Enclosed!"
Now, who among us doesn't need holiday wrapping paper and tags? Well, maybe some of you who have the sense to buy them early don't need them, but I'm not one of you. I'm always running behind and having to do last minute shopping.
Inside the package were charming tags and matching wrapping paper that I will be proud to use this holiday season. Plus the package contained the Holiday Gifts of Joy catalog and a sweet and blessedly short letter wishing me a happy holiday season, thanking me for my past support, and asking for continued support.
A lot of the holiday pitches from charities go right into the recycling bin, but this one I kept and put to good use.
All of this is to remind you of the importance of your entire direct mail package and especially of your teaser on the envelope.
A teaser can make all the difference in whether or not your appeal is ever opened. And any charity can do it. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. Check out some tips at How to Write an Effective Teaser for Your Direct Mail Fundraising Package.
