Question: Why does the IRS take so long to approve the application for a nonprofit?
Answer:

The IRS does have expedited reviews but only under very limited circumstances. Otherwise you just have to wait. It can take several month between submitting your 1023 application and getting approval.

What helps is if your organization clearly qualifies for nonprofit status. That helps the IRS to make a quicker determination. Many first time applicants don't know how to fill out the forms and this causes delay. Getting experienced legal counsel can help avoid some of these problems.
