How to Make Your Donation Count
Figuring Out the Philanthropic Puzzle

By Joanne Fritz, About.com

We all want to help. But, how do we know where to put our money? How can we determine that a nonprofit is legitimate? Where can a donor get more information?

Here are three ways to get your donation on the right track.

1. Play It Safe

The most frequent questions we get about charitable organizations are, "How do I know if an organization is legitimate?" and "How do I report a possible fraudulent nonprofit?"

2. Give Globally

The world has shrunk, and now disasters and upheavals across the world can and do affect us, pulling on our heart and purse strings. But, know what you're doing before going offshore with your donations.

3. Try Out New Methods of Giving

No longer are we restricted to writing a check to our favorite charities. We can go online. We can join a giving circle and share our contributions. We can join the trend toward donor-advised funds. Think outside the box for your contributions this year.
