How Can I Find Low-Cost Legal Advice?

By Joanne Fritz, About.com

Question: How Can I Find Low-Cost Legal Advice?
I am interested in starting an alumni association for my high school and I have a quick question.

From what I gather, the very first step to starting an alumni association is filing articles of incorporation. Many websites, including your About.com site, recommend hiring a lawyer. My problem is that I don't have the funding to do that. Would you know of any organizations that help you with the paperwork for a small fee?

Answer: Check out non-profit legal referral panels. Local bar associations often run such panels. A referral panel can give you names of lawyers experienced in nonprofit law and practice and who offer a discount or free consultation as part of the referral program.

Besides checking out your local bar association, I suggest you start with your own list of alumni. There is probably a lawyer among them who can steer you toward someone you can trust and who will charge a low fee.
