Mobile Giving Glossary*

There are four entities involved in mobile giving:

The Mobile Application Service Provider or Vendor Such as Mobile Accord’s mGive

Has systems to enable text message donations. Facilitates the approval process with the Mobile Giving Foundation, sets up campaign with the carriers, and supports the promotion of the mobile campaigns.

The Mobile Giving Foundation

MGF is a separate 501(c)(3) created to oversee mobile giving standards and best practices for the wireless industry; certify nonprofits wishing to participate in mobile giving; and to facilitate the flow of funds from carriers to participating nonprofits.

Text Aggregator

Entities like mBlox and Verisign that have connections to the mobile carriers and test and approve the campaigns before going live. They work in the background to ensure compliance with the mobile marketing guidelines.

The Carriers (AT&T, Verizon Wireless)

Process the donation requests from the Mobile Application Service Provider and, upon confirmation, the donation is placed on the user's phone bill.
