Name of Your Cause

We are Biking Up The Mess. We are three University graduates who have decided to Bike 4,400km (2,700 miles) from Victoria, Canada to Louisiana. We hope to promote bicycling as a clean alternative to driving and to help the Gulf of Mexico clean up effort in any way possible.

The One Very Best Thing About Your Cause

The oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico is something that could very easily happen off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. There are plans to have a 1,150km (700 Mile) oil pipeline built from the tar sands in northern Alberta to the BC coast. This will increase the oil tanker traffic in Northern BC and any disaster could be devastating. We have seen the worst of what an offshore oil disaster has on the environment and the people and we hope to do our small part in preventing such a disaster to happen back home. Thus, we are bicycling south to meet people, spread awareness on these issues, and do our part to help out.

Advice

  • You can donate online at bikingupthemess.com
  • You can keep up to date on our location as we travel south towards Louisiana (if we pass through your hometown don't hesitate to send us an e-mail!)
  • Spread awareness of what were doing and the issues that are happening in the Gulf.
  • Become a fan on Facebook and/or follow us on Twitter.

Why My Cause Is So Important

We are doing this because we care. We are the future generation of our world and the actions we take now will have monumental changes in the future if we work together. We are not doing this to gain publicity or for 15 minuets of fame, but instead because our future depends on us!

How I Got Involved With My Cause

We are three graduates who have taken it upon ourselves to bike south and raise money for such an important issue in today's world.

Joanne Fritz, Nonprofit Charitable Orgs Guide, says:

What a great idea! We wish the best to these young men.
